"He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.
His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotions like never before? How can he explain he's the heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he's suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods?
Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea...and now it wants him back."

I absolutely loved this book! It was so different than any other book I have ever read. I loved how Córdova wrote this book from the perspective of a teenage boy who at first, doesn't know that he is a merman. Most books are about mermaids and this is the first one that I have seen that isn't. This was such a fun book to read I ended up reading it in one day. I just could not put it down.
Tristan Hart is just your normal sixteen year old high school swim team star living by Coney Island, New York. Until one day while he was working his shift as a life guard, a freak storm happens and he thinks he sees a little girl in trouble in the water. When he runs out to save her he gets sucked into the water and ends up disappearing for 3 days. When he washes up on the beach and his friend and his secret love Layla saves him, he has no recollection of what happened except an image of a silver mermaid with a silver shark toothed smile.
Suddenly he feels very different and has no idea why. Until he suddenly grows a tail and discovers that his mom used to be a royal mermaid princess. He learns that his "Grandpa" (the Sea King) is retiring from the throne and that now he has to compete in a competition for the throne with powerful and fierce merman competitors. The Sea King has a powerful trident that he separates into three parts for the contestants to find. But since the trident has been split the powers holding the dark creatures in capture are fading and everything is becoming more and more dangerous.

The beautiful writing style of Córdova astounds me. She paints a beautiful world of things with such detail that you can picture it perfectly in your mind. It makes you feel like you are actually standing (or swimming) there right along with the characters of this story.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone! Kids, teens, and adults. If you come across this book and pass it up I can honestly say that you are missing out on an inthralling, addictive read.

Look for the next books in the series!
